Unread Number of the Beast

My unread news items tend to stack up sometimes. You know that anxiety you get when your inbox gets too full? The sense of relief you have when it’s all “marked as read” (Kristi!)?

Apparently, if I let mine accumulate too much, I am hastening the apocalypse.

nuke watchers

Speaking of the apocalypse, I watched a little of Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie, which was a fascinating look at nuclear weapons testing up until the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 1963. The most disturbing (or amusing) part was when the Chinese were testing their first bomb. The Moscow Symphony Orchestra created a stunning score, and the tension was palpable. The countdown reaches zero, the bomb explodes, and hundreds of Chinese soldiers are shown cheering. They then show footage of an army group - many on horseback, all with gas masks - rushing into ground zero and firing their Kalashnikovs into the dead zone. Like there’s anyone there to shoot at at this point! A chilling and strangely mesmerizing film - one I want to watch the rest of sometime.
