Alphabet Game For Toddlers

I wrote this waaay back in 2002 when Trinity was a wee nubbin. She liked to sit in my lap while I worked, and press all the keys. After wearying of this, I decided to capitalize on this destructive urge:

This is a simple kid’s game to help them learn their alphabet (and to keep them from destroying our computer files when they want to play on them). Includes a sounds folder (I still need to add 0-9 sounds) and a background image that you can replace. I plan for the next version to have a picture and word, e.g. A is for Apple, etc. I may even make a silly cursor if they like to play with the mouse.

Trinity’s Alphabet Game was born. It’s very simple: the kid presses the letters, a huge letter appears, the colors randomly change, and a voice (my own) speaks the letter. I thought of it today when Fiona (18 months) was pounding away, as usual. Didn’t I make a game for this… aha! Where was that thing…

It still worked! Fiona loved it. She started saying letter sounds (mostly “T” for some reason). Pop it on a laptop for brainy baby fun.

While I never got back to it, it’s great for helping them learn the alphabet. It’ll keep that spreadsheet safe from baby, too! Download it here (Windows executable; I’ll try and make a Mac one).

I love how your house is so technological. Even your baby is a genius with it. Which seems to be necessary this day in age.

This reminds me of a night Andy was in the recording studio. Our friend who owned/operated the studio had his 2-3 year old daughter in his lap. She hit a key, or removed something and the night was over. A few days later after hours of talking to support, they were able to record again. I bet he wishes he had your handy-dandy little tool back then!

Well, it’s not a perfect tool: if your kid is using the game, you can’t use the computer. I haven’t figured out how to solve that one yet. =)
