While I’m still digesting the highlights from the recent NAB 2007 conference, I still have work to do in the real world. One of my projects that is coming close to fruition has been to design, specify, build and configure a networked video system. This would allow multiple video editors to work on one big pile of HD-ready video storage simultaneously - greatly expanding our capabilities at the Luis Palau Association.
After months of research, proposals, haggling, purchasing, and now building, my vision is nearly complete (insert evil laugh here)! The fiber optic cables are being laid; my server and RAID storage are in the rack, the SAN software to link it all together is (finally) working properly. There’s been some very deep, black geek arts excercised lately in my cave.
Then I saw what Apple put together at NAB this last week:

They basically tied “3 miles of fiber optic cable, 4 M2 Gb networks, 90 Xserves and 40 Xserve RAIDs” for a total of 750 terabytes (that’s 3/4 of a petabyte).
And I was getting all excited about my little 2.25 terabyte project. It represents but one of the little boxes in that photo.
