All the Pretty Lights

While I’m still digesting the highlights from the recent NAB 2007 conference, I still have work to do in the real world. One of my projects that is coming close to fruition has been to design, specify, build and configure a networked video system. This would allow multiple video editors to work on one big pile of HD-ready video storage simultaneously - greatly expanding our capabilities at the Luis Palau Association.

After months of research, proposals, haggling, purchasing, and now building, my vision is nearly complete (insert evil laugh here)! The fiber optic cables are being laid; my server and RAID storage are in the rack, the SAN software to link it all together is (finally) working properly. There’s been some very deep, black geek arts excercised lately in my cave.

Then I saw what Apple put together at NAB this last week:

They basically tied “3 miles of fiber optic cable, 4 M2 Gb networks, 90 Xserves and 40 Xserve RAIDs” for a total of 750 terabytes (that’s 3/4 of a petabyte).

And I was getting all excited about my little 2.25 terabyte project. It represents but one of the little boxes in that photo.

Allan my friend,
I have no idea what most of what you are talking about is.  What is a tera byte?  Any ways, I am into your coffee blog.  I do know coffee.

Did I ever send you images of my paintings?  If not, let me know and I will send you pics.  Mostly doing plien air followed by studio paintings of the Sandia mountains here in Albuquerque.  I also started doing some incorporating vinatage neon signs.  In August I will participate in a paint out in Santa Fe with artists from all over.  I am also taking a workshop with a painter named Bill Galen, check his web site out, billgallen.com, really cool stuff.

Anyways,
still trying to get up to NW coast to visit.  When we do we’ll give you a call.

John
