Pre-NAB Trip Tidbits

Ok, I gotta move quickly here. I have two videos and a presentation to pump out today, as much as I’d love to sift through NAB Show intel and work on my blog.

  • I did worship design for PUMP this weekend, and while I stayed up waaay too late working on it Saturday, in general things went ok. Thanks to my wife for keeping me organized and really helping me get the theme and flow nailed. I tried some new things, and as all experiments tend to go some things worked and others didn’t. I feel like I’m on the right track though. One thing I want to explore more of: I showed two songs from the Passion ‘06 Conference DVD, and then keyed lyrics over the top. The result: bringing the concert to us instead of us to the concert! The last song was really powerful and I think people got into it.
  • I went to a funeral out at Abundant Life church near Gresham. They just opened another campus in Parkrose - and it’s a video church, with live music and a DVD of the day’s lesson. Very interesting trend with churches; I’d love to see how it’s coming together.
  • I’d love to make a new landing page on my site, bringing together my Twitter feeds and NAB-related posts. I don’t think I’ll have time, though. I need to focus on the basics: lots of biz cards, making sure my contact info is updated, and taking good notes.
  • The world-renown director and author Stu Maschwitz is following my Twitter feed! I’m a great fan of his book and approach to filmmaking. Hopefully I’ll get to meet him. See what he’s up to here.
  • Twitter: mostly useless 75% of the time, but when you’re at an event - like a conference or Festival - it’s the best way to find people, see what’s hot, and be found. Use accordingly.
  • I wish I didn’t have to leave my family, even though it’s 2.5 days. I love my kids so much. There’s so much to teach them, and so little time. I need to make time, keep it a priority (and keep my priorities straight).

Hey Allan I found this blog in connection with your review of propresenter 3 and have gradually kept on bouncing back to it.  Can I ask a random question (probably ask a few really) did you design the animated background for God in this City for Passion?  I do some audio visual stuff for my church and Christian union and would love to have more visual effects.  I’m unfortunately still in the ye olde era of Powerpoint largely for financial reasons but ProPresenter has really caught my eye and the verstile nature of it is immense.  Thanks for this blog I just keep coming back.

I didn’t do the Passion work. They do awesome stuff, and I’d love to do work like that someday. The work I do for the Luis Palau Association gives me lots of practice for cool event graphics.
If you can’t afford ProPresenter, and you’re on a Mac, consider switching to Keynote. You can import all your old PPT stuff, and the looks and effects are much nicer. Only US$79. I used Keynote for a while before getting into Media Shout (Windows, $299). Frustrations with that led to ProPresenter.

I viewed a number of your videos for the Luis Palau events the commercials etc and was amazed - is that mostly done with Final Cut?  The Cityfest logo’s were pretty awesome is that just alot of flash or photoshop drawings thrown together.  Basically were do you even begin to do things like that.
The reason i’m asking is that I would love to produce something similar for when I am going to Cananda with my uncles band which is potentially next year.  Although I’ve got basics in a number of things I have friends that could use their gifts and abilities i.e. a friend who does 3D animations, and those who are flash geeks etc etc. 
I do still plan to purchase ProPresenter although I’m starting to notice my iBook is running slower than I would want these days so I feel a bigger purchase coming along.  Anyway enough of my rant.
